Applications are open for the Democratising  Education for Global Sustainability and Justice (DemEd Global) three fully funded online short courses for the Fall 2026 intake. The programme is aimed at current and emerging leaders interested in law, policy, climate action, biodiversity, sustainable development and justice.

The courses are designed to help participants understand how legal and policy frameworks can be used to respond to global challenges and advance sustainable development. Participants will learn from experts, engage with global perspectives and connect with a wider community working on sustainability and justice.

 

2026 Fall Courses: 

  • Key Essentials: The Sustainable Development Goals and the Law​ (28 Sept – 9 Oct 2026)
  • Key Essentials: Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Sustainable Development and the Law (12 Oct – 23 Oct 2026)
  • Key Essentials: The Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development and the Law (26 Oct – 6 Nov 2026)

The Fall 2026 programme features three courses, each delivered online over a two-week period.

Courses Available

Key Essentials: The Sustainable Development Goals and the Law

28 Sept – 9 Oct 2026)

This course introduces participants to the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals, law and governance. It explores how legal and policy frameworks can support sustainable development and strengthen implementation at national and international levels.

Key areas include sustainable development law, governance, the global economy, the global biosphere, and the role of law in monitoring and reporting on the SDGs.

Learning Objectives

  • Introduce learners to the relevance of sustainable development law and governance.
  • Engage learners in thinking critically about how sustainable development is reflected in law and governance worldwide.
  • Introduce learners to the role of governance in sustainable development law.
    Prepare learners to strengthen the role of law and policy in monitoring and reporting.
  • Inspire learners to advance their global careers in sustainability and justice.

Key Essentials: Convention on Biological Diversity, Sustainable Development and the Law

12 – 23 October 2026

The second course focuses on biodiversity governance under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Participants will explore biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, sustainable use of natural resources, wildlife trade, ecosystem valuation, traditional knowledge, benefit-sharing, biodiversity finance and scientific cooperation

  • Explore the Global Biodiversity Framework and the tools it offers for policy and law makers, including access to finance, transparency and science.
  • Identify and analyse innovative domestic legal and policy solutions.
  • Prepare learners to strengthen the role of law and policy in monitoring and reporting.
  • Inspire learners to advance their global careers in sustainability and justice.

Key Essentials: The Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development and the Law

26 October – 6 November 2026

This course examines the legal and governance dimensions of climate action under the Paris Agreement.

Participants will explore climate mitigation, net-zero transitions, adaptation, resilience, loss and damage, climate finance, carbon markets, low-emission development, transparency and climate compliance.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Introduce learners to pressing climate change law and governance challenges.
  • Explore the Paris Agreement and the tools it offers for policy and law makers, including access to finance, transparency and science.
  • Identify and analyse innovative domestic legal and policy solutions.
  • Prepare learners to strengthen the role of law and policy in monitoring and reporting.
  • Inspire learners to advance their global careers in sustainability and justice.

 

Funding

The courses are fully funded for successful applicants. Participants do not have to pay the stated course value of £800.

DemEd Global provides this support as part of its effort to expand access to  education in sustainability and justice, particularly for people working in areas facing significant global challenges.

Course Format

The courses are delivered entirely online, making them accessible to participants regardless of their location. Learning combines self-paced study with live virtual classroom engagements.

Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest. Those proceeding to the next stage will receive an email containing instructions for completing the full application.
