Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Ewuare ll, broke with three known major traditions for Governor Okpebholo at his palace three days ago, when the governor visited him after his victory at the election tribunal.
First, Oba of Benin never prays personally for anybody – subjects or non-subjects alike. He delegates a senior palace chief to pray for anyone, but he personally prayed for Okpebholo during the visit.
Secondly, Oba of Benin never gets up from his throne to pray for anyone, or to greet or meet anyone. He sits on his reverred throne without getting up, no matter who visits him. He got up from his throne for Okpebholo.
Thirdly, Oba of Benin never shakes hands with anyone, nor pats anyone on the shoulders or lifts anyone up who knees before him. He did that for Okpebholo.
It doesn’t matter whether you like Okpebholo or not, neither does it matter how you react to these explanations; this is a significant shift from what used to be and a testimony of the king’s affection for the governor, and an open approval of the present administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo.
